SCRANTON, Pa. - For the second straight day, the University of Scranton men's tennis team shutout a non-conference opponent, as the Royals coasted past visiting Marywood on Wednesday afternoon, 9-0, at Royal Courts.
With the victory, Scranton is now 3-8 on the year.
It was a clean sweep to start for Scranton in doubles, as the Royals won all three matches, starting at number one where sophomore Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) grinded out an 8-6 win.
Next up at number two, juniors Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) rolled to an 8-0 win, while at number three, freshman Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) senior Michael O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished off the doubles sweep for Scranton with an 8-3 victory.
In singles, Ochalski (6-0, 6-0), McGurrin (6-3, 6-2) and Prendergast (6-1, 6-1) collected victories in the top three spots in the lineup, respectively, to continue the winning ways for Scranton in the match.
In the final three positions in singles, the Royals finished the sweep with three more victories.
Junior David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number four, freshman Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) collected a 6-2, 6-0 win at number five, and freshman Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) won his fifth straight match overall with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the number six spot to complete the sweep for Scranton.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Merchant Marine in a Landmark Conference match at home beginning at 12 p.m.
