SCRANTON, Pa. - Led by a pair of wins at doubles and four straight victories in the singles lineup, the University of Scranton men's tennis team finished off a successful weekend of Landmark Conference matches, taking a 6-3 decision from visiting Moravian on Sunday at Royal Courts.
With the win, which was Scranton's fourth straight overall, the Royals improved to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the Landmark.
Scranton got off to a great start in the match in doubles play, winning at both the number two and number three positions in the line-up to take a 2-1 lead entering singles.
The first point of the match collected for Scranton came at number two doubles, where juniors Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa,/Wyomissing Area) recorded a convincing 8-1 win, while at number three, freshman Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) and senior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College High School) gave Scranton the lead with an 8-3 win.
In singles, the Royals fell in the number one and two spots, but dominated at positions three through six to pull out the win, as each match that was won by Scranton in singles was in straight sets.
Prendergast finished off a great weekend with a win at number three, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while at number four, junior David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) was just as dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
At number five, Scranton clinched the match, as freshman Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Rounding out the day for the Royals was fellow freshman Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), who won his seventh match in a row overall with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Susquehanna for another Landmark Conference match. Action gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
