SCRANTON, Pa. - Senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) tied the University of Scranton women's tennis program's all-time record for career singles victories, leading the Royals to their fifth straight win overall on Sunday with a 6-3 triumph over Landmark Conference foe Moravian at Royal Courts.
With the victory, Scranton is now 10-5 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in the Landmark.
In the win, the tandem of Walsh and sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) got the Royals started off in the right direction at number one doubles, as they collected an 8-3 win there. With the win, the team of Walsh and Frattaroli are now 10-4 overall on the year, winning their last six matches overall.
The other victory for Scranton in doubles came at number two, where junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa,/Scranton Prep) took an 8-2 victory, as the Royals led it 2-1 entering singles.
There, Scranton won in the top two spots, then again at number four and number six to take the match by three points.
At number one, Walsh collected the 47th victory of her singles career in gritty fashion, gutting out a three-set win (6-0, 4-6, 6-0) to tie her at the top of the career singles victories list with Megan Azzalina, who set the record at the end of last season.
In number two singles, Frattaroli breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win, while at number four, the match was clinched for Scranton by Jakubek, who coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The last win of the afternoon for Scranton came at number six, where freshman Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) posted a 7-5, 6-3 win to finish off the match for the Royals.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Drew at Royal Courts in a Landmark Conference contest that begins at 1 p.m.
