Freshman midfielder Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) made a key steal and score late in the first half to break a tie and propel The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over Goucher in the Landmark Conference opener for the Royals on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the game tied at 3, Olert picked off a cross-field pass in the defensive zone and found herself one-on-one against the goalkeeper. She kept her composure and beat the goalie to the right side with 1:51 left in the half, a play that sparked five straight goals as Scranton (4-3, 1-0 Landmark) took control.

Olert also assisted on a goal by freshman attacker Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) one second before halftime that gave the Royals a 5-3 lead. Olert then scored one of three straight Royals goals to start the second half. She finished the game with two goals and two assists.

Rogers finished with three goals for Scranton, as did sophomore midfielder Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), who had a big game with six draw controls and a caused turnover. Freshman attacker Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) also finished with two goals and an assist.

Junior midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) added a goal and an assist for the Royals, who also received a goal from freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) and two assists, three draw controls and three ground balls from senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck).

Scranton held a 36-19 edge in shots and 13-6 in draw controls. The Royals forced 19 turnovers by Goucher (6-5, 1-1 Landmark), led by a team-high three caused turnovers from senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy).

Scranton will be back in action on Tuesday, April 5, when the Royals host Oneonta State at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
