ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse could not overcome a rough third period as a halftime lead turned into a 9-7 defeat at Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.
Elizabethtown (11-4, 6-0 Landmark) scored the final goal of the first half to cut the Scranton lead to 5-2 at the break, then scored six straight while shutting out the Royals (11-4, 3-2 Landmark) in that fateful third period.
The loss drops Scranton into a tie for fourth place with Merchant Marine Academy with one game remaining. The Royals will host Catholic, which is one game behind in fifth place, on Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Fitzpatrick Field.
Scranton was led by senior midfielder Nicholas Swift (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), who had two goals and an assist, and senior midfielder Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery), who scored twice. Senior midfielders Josh Kasman (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) added a goal each, as did junior midfielder William Joyce (Bethesda, Md./St. John's College H.S.).
Freshman attackman Matt Haemmerle (Hillsdale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) finished with two assists for the Royals, and senior midfielder Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) had one helper.
Sophomore midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) went 11-for-19 in the faceoff circle and had a team-high six ground balls. Mullery added five ground ball pickups and sophomore midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) had four. Carey led the defense with three caused turnovers and sophomore defender Kieran Pues (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had two.
The Royals held a 32-30 edge in shots, but committed 16 turnovers while forcing 11 by the Blue Jays. Each team had 36 ground balls and Scranton was 12 of 14 on clear attempts.
