SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team kept the winning ways going on Saturday against Drew, as the Royals gutted out a 7-2 victory - their sixth straight overall - in Landmark Conference action at Royal Courts.
The Royals, who are now 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the Landmark with the win, honored their two seniors before the match, as well - Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College High School) and Michael O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy).
Scranton got things rolling in doubles action, winning all three matches in the line-up to open a 3-0 lead going into singles.
At number one, sophomore Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) pulled out an 8-6 victory to get the match started, while juniors Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) won their seventh match in a row overall, collecting an 8-3 win at number two doubles.
Scranton finished off the sweep of doubles action at number three, as Murphy and freshman Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) posted an 8-0 shutout victory.
In singles, Drew was able to record their only two points of the match at number one and two singles, as the Royals swept numbers three through six in the lineup to pull away for a five-point victory.
At number three, Prendergast was a winner in three sets (6-1, 1-6, 6-2, his fifth straight win overall), while O'Malley ended his Senior Day on a high note with a three-set victory of his own (6-2, 4-6, 10-3) at number four singles.
Finishing off the match in style for Scranton yet again at number five and six singles were freshman Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), who each won their matches 6-0, 6-0. For Harkins, it was his seventh straight victory overall, while Swope recorded his ninth straight win.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action tomorrow, hosting Juniata in a Landmark Conference match at Royal Courts. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
