Senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) matched her career high with six goals to lead The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team to a 20-8 victory over Elizabethtown on Senior Day at Fitzpatrick Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win secures a Landmark Conference playoff berth for the Royals (9-5, 4-1 Landmark), who have won three straight and six of their last seven. Scranton is in second place in the Landmark Conference standings with one game remaining. The top two teams will host semifinal playoff games.
Scranton scored five of the final six goals of the first half to take an 8-4 lead into the break, then dominated Elizabethtown (6-9, 2-4 Landmark) in the second half thanks to a pair of five-goal runs.
Allen scored three times in each half while scoring six goals for the second time this season. She also accomplished the feat in an 18-7 win at Moravian on March 19. Allen now has 32 goals this season, also a career high.
Sophomore midfielder Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) also had a big afternoon, finishing with three goals, two assists and 11 draw controls, one shy of her career high. She now has 168 career draw controls, second-most in school history and 13 behind the school record of 181, set by Diana Rocklein (2006-09).
Junior attacker Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) and freshman midfielder Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) each had two goals and two assists. Freshman attacker Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had two goals and an assist, and freshman attacker Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finished with a goal and an assist.
The Royals also received a goal each from sophomore attacker Colleen O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), sophomore midfielder Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area), senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and freshman midfielder Paige Stoessel (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East). Sophomore midfielder Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) also had an assist in the win.
The defense was just as solid, led by junior goalkeeper Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), who finished with 11 saves, her third game in the last four with double-digit saves. Senior defender Bridget Gallaher (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) had a team-high three caused turnovers, and Keelan led the team in ground balls with three.
Thanks to Angelo's play in the middle, Scranton had a decisive 21-9 edge in draw controls. The Royals were outshot, 33-31, and committed 18 turnovers to Elizabethtown's 15, but 29 of their 31 shots were on goal, and 20 of them found the net.
Prior to the start of the game, the Royals honored Allen, Gallaher and Keelan for their contributions to the program over the past four years.
The Royals will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27, when they host Cabrini in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
