SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Host Susquehanna rallied back from an early deficit, as the Crusaders knocked off the University of Scranton baseball team on Sunday in the rubber match of a Landmark Conference series, 10-8.
With the defeat, Scranton dropped to 15-17 overall, 9-9 in the Landmark, while Susquehanna improved to 24-11 and 15-3 in the Landmark with the victory.
For the Royals, things could not have gotten off to a better start, as they opened a 7-0 lead Susquehanna entering the bottom of the second inning.
In the top of the first, Scranton exploded out to a 3-0 lead, as senior Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) forced a walk with the bases loaded for an RBI, and fellow senior Tyler Ferretti (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) had a two-RBI single with the bases still loaded to give the Royals the early three-run edge.
Scranton ballooned the lead out to seven run in the top of the second with one swing of the bat, as sophomore Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) smacked a grand slam home run to give the Royals a 7-0 lead. The round tripper for Standen was his second of the season and fourth of his career.
But in the bottom of the frame, Susquehanna got back in the ballgame after scoring six runs to cut the Scranton lead all the way down to 7-6 entering the third.
In the top of the third, sophomore Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had an RBI single to increase the lead to 8-6, but unfortunately for Scranton, that was the final time all game they were able to plate a run.
In the bottom of the fourth, Susquehanna took their first lead of the day, scoring three runs to go up 9-8. The Crusaders added another run in the eighth and proceeded to keep Scranton off the board for six straight innings to pull off the come-from-behind victory.
Overall, Trotter led the way at the dish for Scranton in the loss, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ferreti was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while sophomore Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
On the mound, junior reliever John Kranick (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) took the loss (0-2) for the Royals.
