SCRANTON, Pa. - In their final home match of the Landmark Conference regular season, the University of Scranton women's tennis team captured their seventh straight victory overall, as the Royals knocked off Juniata on Sunday afternoon, 7-2.
With the victory, Scranton improved to 12-5 overall and remain perfect in the Landmark Conference at 6-0.
The Royals put themselves in a great position to grab a victory in doubles, where they won all three matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles action.
At number one, the tandem of senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) won their eighth match in a row, gutting out a tough 8-6 decision.
In the number two spot in doubles, junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) won their seventh match in a row, 8-5.
The sweep of doubles was completed at number three by senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg), as they rolled to an 8-2 victory to give Scranton a 3-0 lead entering singles.
In singles action, Juniata was able to notch victories at numbers one and five in the line-up, but that was it, as the Royals won the other four matches to take the five-point win.
At number two, Frattaroli won her eighth straight match overall, 6-4, 6-4, while Machado notched a straight set win at number three (6-2, 7-5).
Jakubek also won in straight sets at number four (6-2, 6-4), while Smilnak finished off the day for Scranton gutting out a tough win in three sets at number six (5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-2)).
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, as they host King's in an out-of-conference match at Royal Courts. Action gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
