ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - With the top spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference Playoffs on the line, the University of Scranton women's tennis team came up just short, dropping a 6-3 decision to host Elizabethtown on Saturday.
With the defeat, Scranton finishes the regular season 12-6 overall and 6-1 in the Landmark Conference.
Despite suffering the defeat, the Royals will still enter the Landmark Conference Playoffs next week as the number two seed. They will host third-seeded Juniata in the Semifinals of the Playoffs in Scranton on Tuesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, Scranton was only able to collect one win in doubles, as the tandem of senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Elyse Smilnak (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) took an 8-6 match to give the Royals their first point of the afternoon.
In singles action, senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) got Scranton off to a fast start at number one with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 win, but the Royals wouldn't collect another win in singles until it was too late at number six, where Smilnak took a 6-2, 6-2 win.
For Walsh, it improved her record in singles on the year to 14-7, which now puts her in a tie for second all-time in program history in singles victories in a campaign.
In Tuesday's Landmark Semifinals against Juniata, Scranton will look to duplicate a win they captured last Sunday at home against the Eagles, where they took a 7-2 decision.
