CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - The second-seeded University of Scranton women's tennis team saw their season come to an end at the hands of third-seed Juniata on Tuesday night at the Birchwood Tennis Club, dropping a 5-3 decision in the 2016 Landmark Conference Semifinals.
With the defeat, Scranton ends their season with a 12-7 overall mark.
In the loss, the Royals got off to a good start in doubles, winning two of three matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles action.
After Juniata took the first doubles match at number three, Scranton's top team of senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) took an 8-4 decision to get the Royals on the board with a point.
Overall, the tandem of Walsh and Frattaroli ended the year with a 13-5 record, with Walsh winning her 44th career doubles match, putting her second all-time in that category in program history.
Scranton then took the lead in the match at number two doubles, where junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) took an 8-4 decision to put the Royals up 2-1 entering singles action.
But, in singles, Juniata got their footing back, winning at both number three and number one to take the lead at 3-2.
Scranton tied the match back up at 3-3 with a three-set victory by Frattaroli at number two (6-0, 1-6, 6-2), but Juniata took a huge win at number four in come-from-behind fashion in three sets to go up 4-3.
The Eagles then captured the match with a straight set win at number six singles.
With the win, Juniata moves onto the Landmark Conference Championship match at top-seeded Elizabethtown on Saturday.
