MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The University of Scranton women's tennis team opened the Fall portion of the 2016-17 schedule with a 5-4 victory at Messiah on Saturday afternoon.
Things got off to a good start for the Royals in doubles action, as Scranton took two of the three matches contested to take a 2-1 lead to start the match.
In the number one spot on the line-up, the team of junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) captured an 8-6 win, while at number three, the freshman duo of Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and Katerina Ringes (Sandy Hook, Conn./Immaculate) rolled to an 8-1 victory.
In singles, Scranton dominated at the top of the line-up to take the win, winning matches at spots one through three.
Frattarolli took a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one, DeNunzio was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at number two, and senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) was a 6-4, 6-2 victor at number three to clinch the match for Scranton.
The Royals return to action on Sunday morning, traveling to Wilkes. Things get underway at 11 a.m.
