SCRANTON, Pa. - In their final match of the 2016-17 Fall portion of their schedule, the University of Scranton women's tennis team rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play to win five of the six matches contested in singles to take a 6-3 victory over Marywood on Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, Scranton finished off their Fall season with a 2-2 record.
In doubles, the only winners came in the number one spot on the lineup, as senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y. / Our Lady of Lourdes) and sophomore Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) collected an 8-4 win to give Scranton their first point of the day.
But, after losing at the second and third spots in the doubles lineup, Scranton entered singles play down a point. There, the Royals fought back, winning five matches to roll to a three-point victory.
First at number one, junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner, while at number two, freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) was also a straight set winner (6-0, 6-1) to give Scranton the lead back at 3-2.
After a loss at number three singles tied the match at 3-3, Scranton won the final three matches in the line-up to take the victory.
First at number four, sophomore Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) gutted out a three-set win (6-1, 3-6, 6-1), while freshman Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) was a straight set winner at number five singles (7-5, 6-0).
In the final match on the lineup, another freshman, Katerina Ringes (Sandy Hook, Conn./Immaculate), also won in three sets (6-0, 2-6, 6-2) to finish off the victory for the Royals.
Scranton will open their Spring 2017 season in March.
