SCRANTON, Pa. - In a defensive slugfest that saw both teams remained deadlocked in a scoreless tie for 100 minutes, visiting William Paterson was able to get the best of the University of Scranton field hockey team on Wednesday night at Fitzpatrick Field in a shootout, taking it 3-1 over the Royals to officially record a 1-0 victory.
With the loss, Scranton fell to 1-2 on the year, while William Paterson improved to 2-1 with the victory.
In the match, the first half was quiet for both teams offensively, as each took just one shot on goal that was saved by the opposing goalie. In the second half, however, Scranton was very aggressive on the offensive end, taking six shots (compared to just one for William Paterson).
However, the Royals could not find the back of the net on any of their attempts, with three shots being saved. With the match still scoreless after 70 minutes, it headed to overtime, and in the first OT period, Scranton had three more shots denied at the net, sending things to a second overtime.
There, William Paterson mounted an attack on offense, taking three shots. Their lone shot on goal, however, was saved by freshman keeper Tate Ackerman (Endicott, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), sending the match to penalty shots.
Unfortunately for Scranton, the Pioneers were able to leap out to a 2-0 lead in the penalty round and never look back in the 3-1 win. The lone goal scored in the round for Scranton was by sophomore Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) in the third round.
The Royals will now be idle until Tuesday, when they travel to Misericordia for another non-conference match. Things are slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
