SCRANTON - It came down to the final singles match, but visiting SUNY-Oneonta was able to get past the University of Scranton women's tennis team, 5-4, on Wednesday at Royal Courts.
With the loss, the Royals ended the Fall portion of their 2017-18 season with a 6-2 mark. Oneonta improved to 9-0 overall with the victory.
On the day, Scranton started strong in doubles, taking two of the three matches contested to go up 2-1 entering singles.
Taking victories for the Royals were senior Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and junior Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) at number three doubles, 8-5, while junior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) also won their match, 8-5, to put the Royals up 2-0
After Oneonta took the final doubles match (in the number one position) to go into singles down 2-1, the Red Dragons won three matches in a row at numbers four, two, and three in singles to go up 4-2 on the Royals.
Scranton, however, fought back, as sophomore Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) posted a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 win at number five, and freshman Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) gutted out a three-set win (6-2, 4-6, 10-6) at number six to tie the match up at 4-4.
The contest came down to a battle at number one singles between Scranton sophomore Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and Oneonta's Alyssa Brault. Brault, however, was able to take the match on a third-set super tiebreak (6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7) to win the match for the Red Dragons.
Despite dropping the match in tough fashion, it was still a successful Fall season for the women's tennis team, who started the campaign 6-0.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team will return to the court in March to open the Spring portion of their 2018 schedule.
