HAINES CITY, Fla. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team captured three singles matches, along with a doubles contest against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday at Lake Eva Park, but OWU was able to take a 5-4 decision over the Royals.
With the loss, Scranton dropped to 2-5 on the year, while Ohio Wesleyan improved to 8-2 overall with the victory.
In doubles, OWU was able to take two of three matches, but Scranton's number one team of junior Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) was victorious, taking the match by an 8-5 score.
Entering singles action, OWU held a 2-1 lead over Scranton and split the six matches contested to narrowly knock off the Royals by one point.
For Scranton, McGurrin won in the number one spot in singles, 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, sophomore's Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) took hard fought matches in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Harkins was a winner on a tie-break (0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5), while Swope was a straight set victor (6-1, 6-3).
The University of Scranton men's tennis team continues action in Florida on Wednesday, taking on Lindenwood. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
