SCRANTON – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team took control from the start and ran away with an 11-5 victory over Marywood on Thursday afternoon at Pacers Field.
Scranton (3-2) was playing its first game in 15 days, but showed no rust while jumping out to a 5-0 halftime lead, an 8-1 lead midway through the third period and an 11-2 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Junior attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) continued his strong early season with a career high seven points on three goals and four assists. He scored or assisted on five of the Royals' first eight goals.
Senior midfielder John Sheridan (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and freshman attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) added three goals each for Scranton. Senior attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, N.J./Montville) and junior attackman Casey Green (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) also had a goal apiece.
The Royals held a 35-22 edge in shots and won 17 of 20 faceoffs, led by junior midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who went 16-for-17 in the faceoff circle. Drury also had a team-high seven ground balls and Carfaro also had three as the Royals finished with 27 as a team.
The win improves Scranton to 10-0 all-time against Marywood.
Scranton will return to action on Saturday, March 25, when the Royals open Landmark Conference play by hosting Goucher at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
