WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team fell victim to a big run by Catholic in what turned out to be a 12-4 road loss in a Landmark Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
Catholic (10-1, 2-0 Landmark) scored six straight goals at one point and eight of nine from the middle of the first period until the start of the fourth quarter to take an 8-2 lead. Scranton (5-3, 1-1 Landmark) scored to start the fourth quarter, but could not mount a comeback after that.
The Royals were led by junior attackman Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade), who had a goal and an assist. Senior attackman John Sheridan (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), senior midfielder William Joyce (Bethesda, Md./St. John's) and freshman attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) added goals. Senior attackman Jake Haimson (Montville, N.J./Montville) and sophomore attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) also had assists.
Scranton held a 12-8 edge in faceoff wins as junior midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore midfielder Michael Pellegrino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) both won six. The Royal also had a 29-27 edge in ground balls, but were outshot, 40-25, and committed 19 turnovers.
Junior midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) had a team-high six ground balls for the Royals. Carey and senior defenseman Patrick Sawyer (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) both had two caused turnovers to lead the team.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5, when they host SUNY Geneseo at 5 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
