SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton women's tennis dropped a match with Elizabethtown on Sunday at Royal Courts, 6-3, in the Landmark Conference season opener for the Royals.
With the defeat, the Royals dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark Conference, while Elizabethtown improved to 4-4 and 1-1 in the Landmark with the victory.
To open the match, Elizabethtown got up 3-0 on the Royals after sweeping doubles action, taking a trio of matches.
In singles, Scranton came back, winning matches at number three and number two singles to cut the Elizabethtown lead down to 4-2. Winning at number three was senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), 7-5, 6-3, while at number two, freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) was victorious, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
But, E-Town was able to clinch the victory with a win at number five singles over the Royals. Despite that, Scranton freshman Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) ended the day strong for Scranton, taking a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win at number six singles.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, hosting Marywood in a non-conference match at Royal Courts. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
