Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Susquehanna To Clinch Playoff Berth

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – With a playoff berth on the line, The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team came through in a big way, rallying from a three-goal deficit to upend Susquehanna, 7-6, in a Landmark Conference game at Sassafrass Field.

The Royals (7-6, 3-3 Landmark) clinched the fourth seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs, which begin with semifinal action on Wednesday, May 3. The Royals will have to wait til next weekend to find out their semifinal opponent and location.

A pair of freshmen came through in the clutch, delivering the tying and winning goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. Joe Hill (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) tied the game at 6 with 9:39 left when he scored an unassisted goal, and fellow attackman Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) provided the game-winner at the 8:34 mark on an assist by sophomore attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).

The defense took it from there, holding Susquehanna (9-6, 1-4 Landmark) scoreless over the final 10:56. Senior goalkeeper Alex Malecki (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) finished with a career-high 14 saves, including nine in the second half when the Royals allowed just one goal.

Killeen and junior midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) led the offense with two goals and an assist each. Junior attackman Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) added two goals and Dolan finished with two assists.

The Royals were outshot, 36-29, and committed 22 turnovers to just 11 by Susquehanna. But Scranton won 11 of 15 faceoffs, all by junior midfielder Adam Drury (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).

Senior midfielder Patrick Sawyer (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers, and he matched freshman defender Alex Dadourian (Summit, N.J./Summit) with three ground balls to lead the team.

The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, April 29, when they host Washington & Jefferson in a non-conference game at 12 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. The team will hold Senior Day ceremonies prior to the opening faceoff.
