Women's Tennis Coasts Past Juniata, 8-1, on Senior Day

SCRANTON, Pa.  -- The University of Scranton women's tennis team concluded their slate of home regular season matches on Sunday afternoon at Royal Courts in a big way, as the Royals rolled past Juniata, 8-1, in Landmark Conference play.

Before the match, the Royals program honored their lone senior, Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y. /Our Lady of Lourdes).

With the win, Scranton improved to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Landmark Conference, while Juniata fell to 2-5 and 0-4 in the Landmark with the defeat.

The Royals got off to a fast start in doubles play on the afternoon, as Scranton swept all three matches contested to take a 3-0 lead into singles.

Picking up the first point of the day for Scranton was the tandem of junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore), who rolled to an 8-0 win at number one.

In the number three spot, sophomore Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and junior Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) collected the second point of the day for Scranton, winning 8-2.

The doubles sweep was complete at number two, as Machado and sophomore Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) gutted out an 8-6 win.

In singles, Machado became Scranton's first two-time winner on the day in the number three position, as she blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, to give the Royals a 4-0 lead.

Frattaroli then clinched the win for Scranton at number one singles, taking a hard fought three-set win (6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 10-7).

The Royals proceeded to take matches in the four through six spots in singles to complete the day. Jakubek posted a sweep at number four (6-0, 6-0), Smilnak was victorious at number five (6-4, 6-4) and freshman Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) was a winner at number six (6-1, 6-2).

The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Moravian for their Landmark Conference regular season finale. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
