TOWSON, Md - The University of Scranton women's tennis team posted their first win in Landmark Conference play for the year on Saturday at Goucher, rolling to a 7-2 victory over the host Gophers on the road.
With the win, Scranton improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark Conference. Goucher dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In doubles action, Scranton got off to a banner start, winning all three matches contested to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
The first match won on the day by the Royals was by the doubles team of sophomore Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and sophomore Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), who rolled to an 8-2 victory at number three doubles.
In the number one position, junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) also posted an 8-2 win to put Scranton up 2-0 in the contest.
At number two doubles, the Royals completed the sweep, as senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and sophomore Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) gutted out an 8-6 win to put Scranton up 3-0 in the contest.
In singles, Goucher was only victorious in two of the six matches contested, as Scranton clinched their first conference win of the year when Frattaroli won at number one singles, 6-0, 7-5.
Also collecting wins in singles action was Jakubek at number four in a shutout (6-0, 6-0), DeNunzio at number two (6-1, 6-3) and freshman Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) at number six (6-4, 6-4).
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action tomorrow, traveling to Catholic for another Landmark Conference match-up. First serve is set for 12 p.m,.
