WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team won eight of the nine matches contested on the afternoon, as the Royals rolled past host Catholic, 8-1, in Landmark Conference action on the road on Sunday.
With the win, Scranton improved to 5-7 and remained perfect in the Landmark Conference at 3-0 overall. Catholic dropped to 3-9 and 1-3 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In doubles, Scranton rolled, taking all three matches contested by sizable margins.
First at number three, sophomores Brian Harkins (New Farifield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) rolled to an 8-2 win, which was followed up by another 8-2 win at number one by junior Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central).
The double sweep was completed at number two, as seniors Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) were victorious, 8-4.
In singles, the domination by Scranton continued, as the captured five of the six matches contested.
Ochalski and McGurrin clinched the match for Scranton straight set victories at number two and number one, as Ochalski won 6-0, 6-1, and McGurrin was victorious, 6-2, 6-3.
Prendergast won at number three, 6-4, 6-1, while Harkins gutted out a three set win (6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5)).
The final match on the day was won by sophomore Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) at number six singles, as he rolled to 6-0, 6-3 win to complete a banner day for the Royals.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, April 19, as they travel to Drew for another Landmark Conference match. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
