WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of Scranton women's tennis team finished off a banner weekend on the road on Sunday afternoon, as the Royals got past host Catholic in a Landmark Conference match, 6-3.
With the win, the Royals moved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark Conference, while Catholic fell to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the Landmark with the defeat.
In doubles action, Scranton once again rolled, taking all three matches contested for the second straight day to grab a 3-0 lead into singles action.
First at number three doubles, the sophomore tandem of Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) rolled to an 8-0 victory.
Then, at number one, freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and junior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) coasted to an 8-1 win.
The doubles sweep for Scranton was complete at number two, as senior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and sophomore Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) rallied for an 8-5 win, giving the Royals a 3-0 lead into singles in the process.
In singles action, Catholic took back-to-back matches to cut the Scranton lead down 3-2, winning at number three and number two in the line-up. But, Scranton bounced back, taking consecutive matches to clinch the victory over the Cardinals.
First at number four, Jakubek was dominant, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win, then at number one, Frattaroli clinched the win for Scranton with a hard fought three-set victory (7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3).
The final victory of the day for Scranton was collected at number six singles, where freshman Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Marywood in a non-conference match at Royal Courts. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
