SCRANTON, Pa. – Junior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) both had singles and doubles victories to lead The University of Scranton women's tennis team to a 9-0 road victory over Marywood on Wednesday afternoon.
Jakubek teamed with freshman Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) for an 8-2 win at no. 2 doubles. She then went out and picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory at no. 2 singles.
Kelly teamed with senior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) for an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles. In singles play, Kelly rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at no. 3.
Scranton made it a clean sweep of doubles as the no. 3 team of senior Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Central Catholic) and freshman Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) were the first team off the court with an 8-1 victory.
In singles play, Scranton also received a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 1 singles from sophomore Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore). Sophomore Sakira Fussner (Kempton, Pa./Kutztown Area) was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at no. 4 singles. Junior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 5 singles while freshman Lindsey Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 6.
The win gave Royals head coach Janice Winslow a victory over her old team, the third straight year she has led them to a victory over the Pacers. Winslow was the women's tennis head coach at Marywood for 21 seasons from 1986-2007, winning 199 matches. In her four-plus seasons at Scranton, her teams have won 47 matches.
The women's tennis team will travel to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. to compete in the ITA Regionals on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 22-24.
