The University of Scranton women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over Lebanon Valley at the Royal Courts. The Royals improve to 3-0 on the season while keeping the Flying Dutchmen winless in four matches this fall.
Senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) won two matches apiece to lead Scranton to the win in a match played in cool and windy conditions.
The Royals built a 3-0 advantage by sweeping doubles competition from Lebanon Valley.
Jakubek and sophomore Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) notched an 8-2 win at no. 1 doubles while DeNunzio and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) posted an 8-1 victory at no. 2 doubles.
At no. 3 doubles, senior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) cruised to an 8-0 victory.
Scranton pulled away with the match by winning five of the six singles matches.
DeNunzio won her second match of the day at no. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Jakubek matched the feat with a straight sets victory at no. 2 singles.
Scranton won flights four through six after the Flying Dutchmen picked up their lone point of the day with a tiebreaker victory at no. 3 singles.
At no. 4 singles, sophomore Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock Mennonite) claimed a 7-5, 6-0 win while classmate Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) scored a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at no. 5 singles.
Freshman Stephanie Hoffmann (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) rounded out the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 6 singles.
Scranton's schedule will resume in the middle of March with the team's annual Spring Break trip to Florida.
