WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team won the final three matches, capped by a pin by sophomore Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 285 pounds, to defeat Wilkes, 23-21, on Friday night in the first night of the Cross-County Duals at King's College.

Scranton (9-4) dropped five of the first seven bouts, trailing 21-9. But the comeback started when senior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) posted a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds. Junior Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) followed with a 22-7 technical fall in 5:48 at 197 pounds to pull the Royals within 21-17.

That meant that Scranton needed a technical fall or pin from Connelly to win the match.

The drama built through two periods before Connelly delivered with a pin in 5:26, lifting the Royals to victory.

Scranton also received a pin at 133 pounds from senior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) in 3:18 and an 8-4 decision from junior Kevin Merle (Stroudsburg, Pa./Belvidere) at 165 pounds.

The second and final day of the Cross-County Duals will take place on Saturday in the Long Center. Action begins at 12 p.m. when Keystone faces Wilkes. Scranton will take on King's immediately following that bout. The Royals will hold a brief Senior Day ceremony before taking on the Monarchs.
