ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team won its second match in as many days on Monday with a hard-fought, 5-4 victory over Rensselaer in Florida. The Royals improve to 8-2 on the season while dropping the Engineers to 4-3.
Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) were both two-match winners to lead Scranton on the day.
The Royals held a 2-1 edge after doubles play as Frattaroli and Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) posted an 8-3 victory at the top doubles matchup while Smilnak and Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) notched an 8-3 win at #3 doubles.
Rensselaer picked up its first point of the match with an 8-3 decision at #2 doubles.
Both teams won three singles matches apiece to give Scranton the narrow margin of victory.
Frattaroli battled to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 triumph at #1 singles while Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) rallied to win at #5 singles, 0-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Smilnak notched her second victory of the day with a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 win at #6 singles.
The Engineers won flights 2, 3, and 4 in singles play, but were unable to overcome the Royals.
Scranton will return to action on Wednesday evening when the Royals take on Roger Williams at 6:30 p.m.
