ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team swept doubles action to defeat Roger Williams, 6-3 on Wednesday evening in Florida. The Royals improve to 9-2 with their third straight victory while dropped the Hawks to 12-6 overall.
Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore), Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep), and Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) were two-match winners to lead Scranton past Roger Williams.
The two teams were tied 3-3 after splitting the singles matches.
DeNunzio won at #2 singles, 6-1, 6-1 while Jakubek posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #3 singles. Kelly picked up a 6-2, 6-3 decision at #5 singles for the Royals while the Hawks won flights #1, #4, and #6.
Doubles competition proved to be decisive on the evening as Scranton swept all three matches to claim the match.
DeNunzio and Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) teamed up for a narrow, 9-8 (7-3) victory at the top doubles pairing while Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) pulled out an 8-6 triumph at #2 doubles. Kelly and Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) rounded out the doubles' sweep with an 8-4 win at the third pairing.
Scranton will close out its Spring Break trip on Thursday against Franklin & Marshall. First serve between the Royals and Diplomats is set for 11:00 a.m. in Orlando.
