ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team was defeated by Franklin & Marshall in the final game of its Spring Break trip on Thursday, 7-2. The Diplomats improve to 2-3 on the spring while the Royals will bring a 9-3 record back to Scranton after going 3-1 on their trip to Florida.
Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) won a pair of matches to lead Scranton, posting a win at #5 singles after teaming up with Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) for a victory at #3 doubles.
Franklin & Marshall took a 2-1 lead after doubles competition on Thursday. The Diplomats won at the top flight 8-4 while edging the Royals as #2 doubles, 8-6. Kelly and Smilnak battled to a 9-8 (7-2) triumph at #3 doubles for Scranton's first point of the match.
Kelly posted the Royals' lone win in singles action by winning at the fifth flight, 6-4, 6-4. The Diplomats won the other five singles matches though to secure the victory with Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) suffering a narrow, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5 defeat at #3 singles.
Scranton will open the Landmark Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 7 when it welcomes Goucher to the Royal Courts. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Scranton.
