The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team opened the Landmark Conference portion of its schedule with a dominating performance on Sunday, defeating visiting Goucher 21-4 at Fitzpatrick Field. The Royals' notched their third straight victory in their home opener to improve to 5-3 (1-0 Landmark) on the season.
Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) recorded five points on two goals and three assists while Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) (three goals, one assist) and Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) (one goal, three assists) added four points apiece for Scranton.
Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) and Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) netted three goals apiece while Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored twice to go along with an assist in the win.
Scranton scored three times in the first 1:55 of Saturday's contest before Goucher (0-9, 0-1 Landmark) got on the board at the 27:30 mark. The Royals rattled off the next nine goals to claim a 12-1 lead with 11:53 remaining in the first half.
Goucher trimmed its deficit to 12-3 with four minutes left in the opening stanza, but Scranton netted the final goal of the frame to hold a 13-3 cushion at halftime.
The Royals went on to outscore the Gophers 8-1 in the final 30 minutes of play, sandwiching a pair of four-goal runs around the visitor's lone tally of the second half.
Kiera Carmody (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) scored two goals, Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) recorded a goal and an assist, while Bridget Doyle (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) also scored for the Royals.
Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) made two saves in the first half to pick up the win, Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) turned aside one shot in 13:39 of action, while Amanda Trumpore (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) stopped three shots in the final 16:21 of the contest.
Calabro led all players with six draw controls and three caused turnovers on the afternoon while tying for a game-high with three ground balls in the victory.
Goucher (0-9, 0-1 Landmark) was paced by Shannon Stull's three goals while Bridget Den Boer made 17 saves on the afternoon.
Scranton held a commanding 47-14 advantage in shots for the game and had a 25-18 edge in ground balls. The Royals, who also had an 18-8 edge in draw controls, was a perfect, 13-13 on clears while the Gophers were just 9-17 on clearing attempts.
The Royals will travel to Washington, D.C. on Thursday to take on 21st ranked Catholic in a Landmark Conference contest starting at 12:00 p.m.
