Sophomore attackman Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) scored seven goals and The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team used a big second half to thump Catholic, 16-6, in a Landmark Conference game at Fitzpatrick Field on Thursday afternoon.

Kirkwood's seven goals were a career-high and one shy of matching the school record for a single game. He finished with eight points, also a career high. Kirkwood scored once in the first half, then poured in six second-half goals, including Scranton's first three of the third period when they turned a 6-4 halftime lead into an 11-6 edge after three periods.

Scranton (7-4, 1-1 Landmark) also received two goals and an assist from sophomore midfielder Quinn Killeen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./New Providence) and a goal and an assist from both senior midfielder Patrick O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) and junior attackman Tim Dolan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).

Sophomore midfielder Joe Hill (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) and freshman midfielder Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) added a goal each. Senior attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), senior midfielder Brendan McLaughlin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and sophomore attackman Mike Modesti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) each had an assist.

Junior midfielder Adam Maiale (Blue Bell, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) led the defense with four caused turnovers and was second on the squad with seven ground balls. Sophomore defenseman Gordon Paul (Ocean, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) had two caused turnovers and four ground balls, and sophomore midfielder Alexander Dadourian (Summit, N.J./Summit) had two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Jeffrey Sabatini (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) finished with nine saves, five of which came in the second half when the Royals allowed just two goals. Freshman midfielder Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) won 18 of 25 faceoffs and led the team with eight ground balls.

Scranton held a commanding edge in both shots (45-23) and ground balls (47-28). The Royals were 2-for-5 in man-up situations, completed 19 of 22 clear attempts and committed 15 turnovers.

Catholic (7-4, 1-1 Landmark) completed 15 of 19 clear attempts and went 0-for-3 in man-up situations. The Cardinals also had 16 turnovers.

Scranton will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4, when the Royals host Misericordia at 6 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
