Comeback Bid Falls Short as Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-14 Decision at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford built a 16-9 lead with just under nine minutes left in regulation and held off a late comeback attempt by The University of Scranton to edge the Royals in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon, 16-14. Both teams are now 2-1 on the young season.

Kate Calabro (Seaford, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led all players with seven goals in the loss while Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added two goals and two assists for the Royals.

Scranton jumped out to a 3-1 lead on Saturday and held a 6-4 advantage with 11:53 remaining in the first half before Haverford scored four of the final five goals of the stanza to hold an 8-7 lead at halftime.

Lead 12-9 at the 17:05 mark of the second half, the Fords netted four straight goals to hold a seven-goal cushion with 8:44 remaining.  The Royals reeled off five goals in the final 6:07 of the contest, but time ran out on the visitor's comeback bid.

Allie Gibbons led Haverford with five goals and one assist while Molly Lausten added four goals and one helper in the win. 

Rachel Romens made a game-high nine saves for the Fords in to pick up the win.

Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) dished out a game-high three assists for the Royals, Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored twice, Mary Kate Horton (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) contributed a goal and an assists, while Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also scored for Scranton.

Calabro led all players with six draw controls in the contest while Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) posted game-highs of six ground balls and six caused turnovers.   

Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) made seven stops in 32:30 for Scranton while Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) turned aside five shots in 27:30 of action.

The game was tightly contested statistically, with Haverford holding a 36-34 edge in shots, a 17-15 lead in draw controls, and a narrow, 18-15 advantage in groundballs.  The Fords, who converted 4-of-6 free position shots, were 9-of-16 on clearing attempts while the Royals went 1-of-5 from eight meters and were 9-of-12 on clears.

Scranton will visit No. 11 Ithaca on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference tilt at 4:00 p.m.
