The University of Scranton baseball team had an answer every time Widener scored on Wednesday afternoon, except the final time, as the Pride used a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to hand the Royals a 7-4 defeat at Volpe Field.

The Royals (10-13) had fought back to tie the game twice, once with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and again with a run in the bottom of the seventh. But Widener (14-15) had the final say with the blast in the ninth and then stranding to Scranton runners on base to end the game.

Scranton hit its first two homers at Volpe Field, as senior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot and sophomore third baseman Brandon Peters (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) had a two-run shot in the sixth for his second round-tripper in as many days.

Trotter finished the game with three hits, two runs and an RBI. He now has 193 career hits.

The Royals also got a triple and a run scored from freshman left fielder Connor Harding (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal Central).

Senior righty Anthony Caladie (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) had a strong relief appearance on the mound, tossing three shutout innings, allowing two hits while fanning two.

The baseball team will be back in action on Thursday when the Royals host King's College at 5 p.m. at Volpe Field.
