Men's Tennis Earns Big Conference Win Over Drew, 7-2

The University of Scranton took a major step toward clinching a berth in the Landmark Conference men's tennis playoffs by defeating Drew at 7-2 at the Royals Courts on Wednesday.  The Royals improve to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference matches with their fourth straight victory while dropping the Rangers to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in Landmark play.

Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), and Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) won two matches apiece to lead Scranton to the victory.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead into singles competition after winning the bottom two flights in doubles action.  Ochalski and Harkins earned an 8-2 win at #2 doubles while Swope and Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) cruised to an 8-1 victory at #3 doubles.

Scranton pulled away by winning five of the six singles matches.  Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) won at #2 singles 6-4, 6-3 while Ochalski's second win of the day with a straight sets decision at #3 singles.

Swope won his second match with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at #4 singles, Harkins added his second win at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Connor Lemieux (Guilford, Conn./The Gunnery) posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at #6 singles.

Drew claimed its only two points of the match with wins at #1 doubles and #1 singles.

Scranton will visit Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon for a Landmark Conference match starting at 1:00 p.m.
