The University of Scranton women's tennis team guaranteed itself a postseason appearance for the 14th straight year on Wednesday by defeating Drew 6-3 at the Royal Courts. The Royals, who sit alone atop the conference standings, improve to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in Landmark Conference play with their fifth consecutive victory.
Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) won a pair of matches to lead Scranton past the Rangers, who fell to 7-5 on the season including a 1-3 record in league matches.
The Royals claimed a 2-1 edge after doubles play by winning flights #2 and #3. Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) posted an 8-3 victory at #2 doubles while Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) won at the third pairing, 8-4.
Scranton won four of the six singles matches to pull away for the victory.
Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) scored a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top singles flight while Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 decision at #2 singles.
Jakubek earned her second victory of the afternoon at #3 singles, 6-0, 6-4 while Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) scored a 6-3, 7-5 triumph at #5 singles.
Drew picked up two points in singles action with victories at flights #4 and #6.
Scranton will travel to Susquehanna on Saturday for a Landmark Conference match starting at 1:00 p.m.
