SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team clinched a berth in the Landmark Conference playoffs on Saturday, cruising to a 9-0 victory at Susquehanna. The Royals (10-3, 5-1 Landmark) set up a showdown with Juniata on Sunday in a match that will determine the #2 seed and home court advantage in the Landmark Conference semifinals.
Goucher has clinched the top seed in the upcoming Landmark playoffs by virtue of its 6-0 record and head-to-head wins over Scranton and Juniata. The Royals and Eagles are both 5-1 and will occupy the #2 and #3 seeds with tomorrow's winner to host the other in the semifinal round of the championship tournament.
Sunday's decisive matchup was setup by Scranton's dominant win over the River Hawks (8-5, 3-3 Landmark) on Saturday.
Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), and Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) all won two matches apiece to lead Scranton to its fifth consecutive victory.
The McGurrin brothers battled to an 8-6 win at the top doubles flight while Harkins and Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) scored an 8-4 victory at #2 doubles. Swope and
Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) cruised to an 8-1 win at #3 doubles as Scranton held a 3-0 advantage at the conclusion of doubles competition.
In singles play, Tarquin McGurrin won at the top pairing, 6-2, 6-2 while Keller McGurrin earned a hard-fought, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 decision at the second flight.
Swope picked up his second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at #3 singles while Harkins matched the feat with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #4 singles.
Connor Lemieux (Guilford, Conn./The Gunnery) won at the fifth singles pairing, 6-1, 6-1 while Emmett Ryan (Manchester, Mass./Canterbury School) rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 win at #6 singles.
Scranton will play its final Landmark Conference match of the season tomorrow at Juniata. First serves are set for 12:00 p.m. in Huntingdon, Pa.
