Men's Tennis Secures #2 Seed in Landmark Playoffs With 8-1 Triumph at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton will be the #2 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference men's tennis playoffs after closing its conference schedule with an 8-1 victory at Juniata on Sunday.  The Royals improve to 11-3 overall and finish with a 6-1 record in Landmark play with their sixth straight win.

Scranton will host Juniata (10-7, 5-2 Landmark), who will be the #3 seed in the postseason tournament, in a semifinal match on Wednesday, May 2 at the Royal Courts.

Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), and Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) won two matches apiece on Sunday to lead the Royals past the Eagles.

With the second seed on the line on Sunday, Scranton jumped out to a 3-0 advantage by sweeping doubles competition.  The McGurrins posted an 8-4 victory at #1 doubles while Harkins and Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) battled to a 9-7 victory at #2 doubles.

Swope and Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-2 triumph at the third flight.

The Royals pulled away in singles action by winning five of the six matches.  Tarquin McGurrin won his second match of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the top flight while Keller McGurrin rallied for a 0-6, 6-4, 7-2 victory at #2 singles.

Swope defeated his opponent at #4 singles, 6-4, 6-2 while Harkins scored a straight sets victory at #5 singles.  At the sixth flight, Connor Lemieux (Guilford, Conn./The Gunnery) was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 score line.

Juniata picked up its lone point of the match with a win at #3 singles.

Scranton will close out the regular season on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Clarks Summit starting at 4:00 p.m. on the Royals Courts.
