The University of Scranton women's tennis team opened Landmark Conference play with a 9-0 victory over Goucher on Saturday night at the Birchwood Tennis Club. The Royals did not miss a beat despite being idle for the last three weeks while improving to 10-3 (1-0 Landmark) on the season.
Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown), Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore), Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep), and Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) were two-match winners on the evening to lead Scranton past the Gophers (6-6, 1-1 Landmark).
Scranton swept doubles competition to hold a 3-0 advantage going into singles matches on Saturday.
Frattaroli and DeNunzio posted an 8-1 victory at #1 doubles while Jakubek and Klacko notched an 8-4 decision at #2 doubles. Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) rounded out the doubles' sweep by battling to an 8-7 (7-3) triumph at the third pairing.
In singles action, Frattaroli won 6-0, 6-2 at the top flight while DeNunzio was victorious at the second matchup, 6-2, 6-1. Jakubek claimed her second victory of the night at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-0 while Klacko did the same at #4 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score line.
Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) topped her opponent at the fifth flight, 6-4, 6-4 while Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) won at #6 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Scranton will be back in action on Sunday against Landmark Conference foe Catholic starting at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood.
