SOUTH ABINGTON TWP., Pa. – Senior Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) set the program record for career doubles victories as The University of Scranton women's tennis team whitewashed Catholic, 9-0, in a Landmark Conference match on Sunday at the Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club.
Frattaroli teamed with sophomore Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) for an 8-6 win at no. 1 doubles for her 47th career doubles win. That eclipses the previous record of 46, set by Megan Azzalina (2011-15).
All six Royals posted wins in both singles and doubles. DeNunzio earned her singles win at no. 2, posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at no. 3singles and teamed with freshman Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) for an 8-3 win at no. 2 doubles. Klacko did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 4 singles.
Sophomore Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win at no. 5 singles. Junior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) also had a three-set win, 0-6, 6-0, 10-6, at no. 6 singles. Kelly and Smilnak also paired for an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles.
The women's tennis team will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, when they host Moravian at 1 p.m at Royal Courts.
