WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The University of Scranton opened the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Thursday morning at Williams College's Torrance Hunt Courts. The Royals (19-3) advance to Friday's second round where they will take on host and defending national champion Williams at 9:30 a.m.
Scranton continued its record-breaking season by posting its 10th victory in a row while winning an NCAA Tournament match for just the second time in program history. The Royals will now face the host Ephs, who are currently ranked 2nd in the country and received a first round bye.
Scranton won all three doubles matches on Thursday to take a 3-0 advantage into singles competition against the Griffins.
Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) won a pair of matches and clinched the victory with a win at #3 singles for Scranton.
Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Katherine Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) gave the Royals their first point of the match by cruising to an 8-0 victory at #3 doubles.
Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) notched an 8-3 victory at #2 doubles before Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at the top flight.
In singles competition, Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) moved Scranton to within point of the overall victory by winning in straight sets at the #6 pairing before Jakubek closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3 singles.
The Griffins, who finish the season with a 14-4 record, won the first set in the other four singles matches which were not completed once the team result was secured by the Royals.
