WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team won four of the seven singles draws to dominate play at the King's College Fall Invitational on Saturday at King's College.
Junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) led the Royals by winning the no. 1 singles bracket. She reached the final with 8-0 and 8-1 victories, and took the final, 8-6, over King's sophomore Emily Fernandez.
Sophomore Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) won the no. 5 singles draw with a trio of dominant wins. She posted 8-4 and 8-1 victories to reach the final, where she scored an 8-3 win over Susquehanna freshman Haley White.
Freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) won the no. 6 draw, losing just four games along the way. She posted back-to-back 8-2 victories to reach the final, then shut out Susquehanna's Izzy Ferrari, 8-0, in the final.
Sophomore Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) took the no. 7 draw by posting a pair of 8-0 wins to reach the final. There, she defeated freshman teammate Julia Kuhns-Baione (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), 8-5.
Senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) joined Kuhns-Baione with second-place finishes. Jakubek was second in the no. 2 draw while Kelly finished runner-up in the no. 4 draw.
The event, which was originally scheduled to include doubles play and span the entire weekend, was moved indoors and become a one-day, singles-only event due to inclement weather all weekend.
