PINE VALLEY, N.Y. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team opened the spring portion of their 2018-19 schedule on Saturday at Elmira in style, as the Royals shutout the host Soaring Eagles, 9-0, in a match held at the MAC Tennis Dome.
With the win, Scranton moved to 3-0 in matches for the season, while Elmira fell to 0-3 with the loss.
The domination on the day for Scranton started in doubles, where the Royals swept the one through three spots in the line-up to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
At number one, sophomore Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and senior Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) rolled to an 8-0 win, while at number two, the senior tandem of Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also shutout their opponents in another 8-0 win.
Finally, at number three doubles, the freshman duo of Christopher Kocon (Mountain Top, Pa./Holy Redeemer) and Adrian Maggiani (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) posted an 8-3 victory to give Scranton the 3-0 lead into singles.
It was more of the same in singles, where the Royals took six matches, all in straight sets, to collect the 9-0 win.
Overall, McGurrin (6-2, 6-2 at number one), Ochalski (6-0, 6-0 at number two), Swope (6-1, 6-0 at number three) and Harkins (6-0, 6-0 at number four) became two-time winners on the day with their victories in the top four spots of the singles line-up.
At number five singles, graduate student Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win, as did freshman Daniel Scala (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) at number six to complete the sweep for Scranton.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 2nd, as they travel to Pratt for another non-conference match. Action starts at 12 p.m.
