S. ABINGTON TWP., Pa. - In the first match of the spring portion of their 2018-19 schedule, The University of Scranton women's tennis picked up where the left off in the fall, as they blanked visiting Messiah, 9-0, in a match played at Birchwood Tennis Club.

With the win, Scranton moved to 4-0 on the year, while Messiah fell to 0-4 with the defeat.

To start the day off, the Royals controlled doubles action, taking all three matches contested to go up 3-0 in the match.

At number one doubles, juniors Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) rolled to a 8-1 win, which was followed up by an 8-2 win by sophomore Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep).

In the number three doubles spot, the tandem of senior Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Prep) completed the double sweep with an 8-1 win.

In singles action, it was more of the same, as Scranton controlled play to complete the sweep with six victories.

The top four spots in the line-up saw four players become two-time winners on the day in DeNunzio (6-1, 6-0 at number one), Jakubek (6-2, 6-0 at number two), Klacko (6-3, 1-6, 10-6 at number three) and Kelly (6-2, 6-4 at number four).

The sweep was then completed by the sophomore pair of Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) and Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock), who were straight set victors at the number five and six spots, respectively. Roberto was a 6-1, 6-4 winner, while Campo collected a 6-0, 6-0 win.

The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, March 8 when they open their slew of spring break matches in Florida. Then, the Royals will take on Rensselaer at a time to be announced.
