SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's track & field team enjoyed a strong showing on Saturday, placing fifth at the Landmark Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University. The Royals totaled 49 points in the competition among the conference's seven teams.
Scranton enjoyed numerous personal records on the day and had six top-three results in the competition.
Sophomore Rachel Kerr (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) along with juniors Jasmin Russo (Hamden, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy) and Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) led the Royals with silver medal performances.
Kerr placed second in the 3,000 meter run, finishing just .28 second off the winning time. Her mark of 10:31.02 in the event was 17 second better than her previous personal record.
Russo finished second in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal record time of 9.74 seconds to finish just .05 seconds behind the race winner.
Banas claimed silver in the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.62 meters.
Junior Chrissy Noonan (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) had a strong effort in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing in third place just behind Russo with a personal best mark of 10.07 seconds. Noonan also went on to finish 10th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.63 seconds.
Freshman AnnMarie Onwuka (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) finished third in the 400 meter dash with a personal record mark of 1:02.76. Onwuka also finished seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.21, one place ahead of freshman Ariana Baldwin (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) who clocked a personal record time of 28.68 in the race.
Freshman Meghan McGonigle (Mullica Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) brought home a fourth place result in the high jump with a leap of 1.47 meters while junior Hannah Tracy (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) was fifth in the shot put with a personal record toss of 10.33 meters. Tracy also finished 10th in the weight throw with a mark of 11.24 meters.
Freshman Nikki George (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) brought home a seventh place finish in the 800 meter run, besting her personal record mark in the event by seven seconds after crossing the stripe in 2:28.45.
Sophomore Emily de Onis (Blue Town, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added a ninth place finish in the one mile run by finishing the race in 5:40.13 while freshman Lea Credido (Denville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) took 10th place in the 200 meter dash with a personal record mark of 28.84 seconds.
The Royals were strong in relay events as well as Baldwin, Credido, Onwuka, and senior Alexa Cardella (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) finished third in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:55.50 while Baldwin, Onwuka, George, and freshman Alexis Mills (Dracut, Mass./Central Catholic) took sixth in the 4x400 meter relay with a mark of 4:28.86.
Scranton opens its outdoor slate on Saturday, March 23 at the Golden Ram Collegiate Invitational hosted by West Chester University.
