WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Scranton women's tennis team won all three matches in doubles play, then captured wins in the first two flights on singles action to pull out a 5-4 win at Catholic on Saturday in Landmark Conference action.
With the win, Scranton moved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference.
The victory saw the Royals control doubles action, as they captured a victory in all three flights to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
First, at number one, junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and sophomore Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) were 8-5 winners, which was followed up by an 8-6 win at number two by senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson).
The sweep of doubles was completed at number three by senior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) rolled to an 8-2 win.
In singles, the Royals were able to collect victories at the number one and two flights to clinch the match, despite the fact that Catholic won matches in singles flights three through six to come within one point of Scranton.
At number one, DeNunzio rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win, while at number two, Jakubek clinched the win for the Royals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, as they make the short trip to Goucher for another Landmark Conference road match. Action gets underway at 2 p.m.
