TOWSON, Md. - The University of Scranton women's tennis team finished off a successful weekend of Landmark Conference matches on Sunday afternoon, as the Royals made quick work of host Goucher in a 9-0 shutout win on the road.
With the win, the Royals improved to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference.
The afternoon got off to a quick start for the Royals in doubles, as Scranton coasted to three victories to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
The first victory of the day was registered in the third flight of doubles by senior Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) and junior Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) rolled to an 8-2 victory. Then in the second flight, senior Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) and freshman Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) posted an 8-4 win to put Scranton up, 2-0.
Finally, at number one doubles, junior Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) and sophomore Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) captured an 8-5 win to complete the doubles sweep for the Royals.
It was more of the same for Scranton in singles action, as they posted six victories, all in straight sets, to finish off the shutout win.
In singles action, Denunzio (6-3, 6-1 at number one), Jakubek (6-0, 6-0 at number two), Campo (6-1, 6-2 at number four) and Kelly (6-0, 6-0 at number five) all became two-time winners on the afternoon.
Scranton's other two victories in singles were recorded by sophomore Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) at number three (6-2, 6-2) and sophomore Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame) at number six (6-3, 6-2) to complete the sweep of the Gophers in Landmark action.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, as they host Juniata in a Landmark Conference match at Royal Courts. Action begins at 1 p.m.
