The University of Scranton dealt visiting Juniata its first loss of the 2018-19 season on Sunday, defeating the Eagles 7-2 at the Royal Courts in Landmark Conference men's tennis action. The Royals lift their record to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play while dropping Juniata to 9-1 (4-1 Landmark) this season.
Seniors Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) won two matches apiece to lead Scranton past the Eagles.
The Royals took a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles play by winning the second and third flights.
Harkins and graduate student Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) posted an 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles while Swope and freshman Christopher Kocon (Mountain Top, Pa./Holy Redeemer) notched an 8-5 win at no. 3 doubles.
Scranton put the match away by winning five of the six singles contests.
Sophomore Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 12-10 win at the top pairing while senior Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J. / Hopewell Valley Central) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 2 singles.
Swope scored his second win of the day with a 7-5, 6-2 win at no. 3 singles while Harkins matched the feat with a straight-set victory at no. 4 singles.
The Eagles won at no. 5 singles while freshman Daniel Scala (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was victorious at no. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
Scranton returns to the courts on Saturday when it hosts Moravian in a Landmark Conference match starting at 1 p.m. on the Royal Courts.
