HAVERFORD - Both sophomore Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and senior Michael Elefonte (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) had hat tricks to lead the way, as The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team outscored host Haverford, 6-1, in the third quarter to coast to a 14-9 win on Wednesday.
With the win, Scranton moved to 1-1 overall on the year, while Haverford fell to 0-2 with the defeat.
After a first quarter that saw both teams score three times, each, Scranton grabbed a lead in the second quarter, scoring back-to-back goals to take a 5-3 edge. Haverford, however, answered just before halftime, as Scranton took a 5-4 lead into intermission.
But, out of the break, the Royals took control of the contest, scoring five unanswered goals in seven minutes to grab a 10-4 lead on Haverford with 8:44 to go in the third quarter. In the scoring barrage, five different Scranton players scored goals, as well.
After a Haverford score stopped the run with 3:11 left, Lukasiewicz put Scranton back up six entering the fourth with a goal to end the period, as the Royals went into the final quarter up, 11-5, on Haverford.
In the final period, Haverford scored first, but Scranton answered with back-to-back goals to open an insurmountable 13-6 lead with 12 minutes left in regulation. From there, Scranton coasted, collecting an eventual five-goal win over Haverford to take their first victory of the 2020 season.
Overall, Łukasiewicz and Elefonte led the offense in the victory, scoring three goals, apiece, with Elefonte also recording an assist. Elefonte also gobbled up five ground balls on the day, with Lukasiewicz collecting a pair of ground balls.
Elsewhere, sophomore Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and senior Joe Hill (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) had two goals, apiece, as Bouhall has two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Rounding out the multiple-goal scorers was senior Mike Modesti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who ended with a pair of goals and three ground balls.
The scoring sheet was rounded out by junior Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior Connor Kirkwood (Millburn, N.J./St. Peter's Prep), who each scored a goal and added an assist in the victory. Kirkwood also had four ground balls in the victory, while Holmes had three.
In ground balls, Scranton was led by junior Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J/Hillsborough), who had seven, while sophomore Dante Venuto (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) led the defense with four caused turnovers. In net, junior Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) once again had a big game, making 16 saves in his first victory of the year.
The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Muhlenberg. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
