ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) matched her career-high with eight points and The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (5-1, 5-1 Landmark) rolled to a 22-11 victory over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (1-5, 1-5 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field in Elizabethtown.
Henson had three goals and also tied a career-high with five assists, while freshman Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) added four goals and an assist and senior Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Junior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) also added a hat trick in the win for the Royals.
The 22 goals is the most Scranton has scored since a 22-7 win over Messiah on Feb. 16, 2019.
For Henson, this marks her second eight point game of the season and she had previously set a career-high of five assists on April 6, 2019 at Goucher.
Henson opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game and Scranton scored 10 of the first 11 goals of the game as a tally from junior Jennifer Williams (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) made it a 10-1 game with 9:30 left in the opening stanza. Dunn found the back of the net in the final minute of the half and the Royals led 11-4 at the half.
Reich scored consecutive goals to open the second half and Dunn completed the hat trick to open up a 15-5 advantage with 20:00 left. The Blue Jays put together a rally and cut the lead to 16-10 with 14:26 remaining, but Scranton responded with the next three goals and sophomore Erin Wheeler's (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) goal at the 6:02 mark stretched the lead back to nine at 19-10. As a whole, the Royals scored six of the final seven goals of the game.
Wheeler and senior Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) added two goals apiece for the Royals, while other goal scorers on the afternoon included Williams, senior Kiera Carmody (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), junior Amanda Whelan (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and freshmen Tara Kotten (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and Nicolette DeVito (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven).
Wheeler had a big day across the board with three goals, five ground balls, seven draw controls and four caused turnovers, while McCusker added four draw controls and a caused turnover. Defensively, freshman Grace Dabulas (Scotch Plains, N.J./Westfield) notched four ground balls and four caused turnovers and senior Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made 10 saves in net.
Lexie Sharp paced ETown with five goals and two assists in the setback.
The Royals will close out the home portion of their regular season schedule when Drew comes to town for a Landmark Conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon. Opening draw at Weiss Field is slated for 4 p.m.
